FURFURYL ALCOHOL CLASSIFICATION – GOOD NEWS!

 
F.lli Mazzon S.p.A. is glad to inform its Customers about the new classification of furfuryl alcohol. The new regulations entered into force starting from August 2016 are less restrictive than the previous ones, thus facilitating the use of such raw material. In the next weeks, we will update our safety data sheets of all our foundry binders containing furfuryl alcohol. Hazardousness levels will be consequently reduced.  

Indeed, the classification of Acute Toxicity by inhalation of the furfuryl alcohol substance has been downgraded from category n. 2 (H330 - Fatal if inhaled) to category n. 3 (H331 - Toxic if inhaled). While the classifications of Acute Toxicity by ingestion (H301 – Toxic if swallowed) and by skin contact (H311 – Toxic in contact with skin) remain unvaried.

This update is included in the REACH registration dossier, updated in May 2016 and published on the ECHA website (European Chemicals Agency) on the 17.08.2016. 

Moreover, new toxicological data (LC50 e LD50) have been provided, thus modifying the Acute Toxicity of the mixtures containing furfuryl alcohol.   

Therefore, it can be stated that all the mixtures containing such substance are going to be classified “Toxic of catergory n.3”:

  • H311 Toxic in contact with skin: furfuryl alcohol content ≥ 40 %
  • H301 Toxic if swallowed: furfuryl alcohol content ≥ 44 %
  • H331 Toxic if inhaled: furfuryl alcohol content ≥ 50 %

The mixtures with a content of furfuryl alcohol <40% are going to be classified “Toxic of catergory n.4”, i.e. harmful

Nevertheless, we hereby inform the Customers that there may be changes due to future updates in the ATP (adaptation to technical progress) or due to the publication of new toxicological data. This means a consequent variation of our Safety Data Sheets, which will be immediately notified to our Customers.
